Finding Hope in the Darkness

Easter Sunday is right around the corner!

For real, it's only 6 days away. I love Easter. It's filled with so many fun family traditions, good food, new outfits and JOY. This year, it's looking a bit different. My heart has been heavy because I realize I am going to have to miss many family traditions that are so close to my heart. As I sat and cried on my husband's shoulder, he assured me that he would make this Easter as normal as possible. (Bragging moment: He loves me so well y'all!) As we talked through sweet memories and traditions we loved, I started making a mental list of all the things we had to have. Supplies for hash brown casserole, an egg dying kit, and chocolate bunnies made the list almost immediately, but then my memories came flooding back of a tradition so close to my heart... Resurrection Rolls.

Resurrection Rolls were what I looked forward to most at our big family Easter egg hunts. My sweet Aunt Peggy used to lead all the kids in making the rolls that inevitably reminded us of what this candy filled holiday is all about. Maybe you're familiar with this activity or maybe this is totally new to you, whichever category you fall in, I can't wait to share this sweet memory with you.

For these yummy treats we needed marshmallows, crescent rolls, cinnamon, and melted butter. So simple but honestly so yummy! Who doesn't love butter and toasted marshmallows??? (I'll link the recipe at the bottom of this post!)

My Aunt Peggy would gather all the kiddos around the table and in her sweet, calming voice, she would grab our attention almost immediately. She began by telling us the story of Jesus and how He came to save us all. She explained how He lived a perfect life, but went to the cross to die for our sins. She led up to right when Jesus was taken down from the cross and proceeded to tell us about the hopelessness of the world when the skies went dark. The ingredients were laid in front of us and she began instructing us to pick up our marshmallow. The marshmallow represented Jesus and how He was pure and without sin. Then, we took melted butter, which represented oils that were put on Jesus, and we rolled the marshmallow in it. After the marshmallow was coated we dusted it with cinnamon, which represented the spices that Jesus was anointed with before He was put in the tomb. Last, we placed the marshmallow in the center of our crescent roll dough and wrapped the dough around our marshmallow. The roll was a representation of the tomb that Jesus' body was laid in. Finally, my Aunt Peggy led us to put our rolls in the oven. While we waited on them to cook she would remind us that Jesus was to rise 3 days later. She would tell us of how the disciples were confused and Mary, His mother, was mourning. When the rolls were ready, my Aunt FINALLY said we could eat them. We were so excited to eat our sweet treat, but when we took the first bite we noticed the marshmallow was gone. Aunt Peggy would excitedly tell us that Jesus had risen from the grave and was no longer dead. He rose again to save us ALL.

What seemed like a fun tradition for the kids all those years ago was actually a reminder of why we celebrate Easter. It kept the focus on Him when it was easy to get distracted by the egg hunts, Easter baskets, and pretty dresses. So, one thing I know for sure is that we are definitely having Resurrection rolls this Easter.

What a sweet reminder of what Easter is about when it's easy to get lost in what we are missing this year. So, this year we will keep our eyes on the cross and celebrate the Savior that came for us and died on the cross for our sins. We will remember the grace that He has shown us and the new mercies every morning. Thank you Jesus for giving this sinner hope when our world is dark.

Since Easter is different this year, I want to challenge you to make Resurrection rolls and remember why we are celebrating. It's okay to be sad and miss the things that are different, but keep the cross as your focus. He restores all things and makes all things new. Maybe we are in this season because God is trying to get our attention and bring us back to the truth of the season. This is a chance to gather the ones you are with and focus on Him. My Aunt Peggy made such an impact on my life. She always pointed all of us to Jesus and made sure to remind us that He was the point of life. I loved her dearly and even from heaven she is sending me sweet reminders during such a dark time.

The SOUL Purpose is that God sent His only son to save your soul. He did that by coming as a baby and living a perfect life only to be crucified on a cross, but 3 DAYS LATER He rose again! Jesus did that for YOU and for EVERY soul on this earth. Remember Him this coming Sunday and give your life to the only one that can give HOPE in the darkness. I love you all and I am praying that you are staying safe, healthy, and kind.

Here's the link to resurrection rolls if you've never made them before!
